Sources

Sources are Nodes that provide a voltage or Current for the circuit

Voltage

An ideal voltage source maintains a constant voltage no mater the change in circuit parameters

In a circuit, the voltage 𝑉𝑇 of the circuit is always equal to the voltage of the source 𝑉𝑆

𝑉𝑆=𝑉𝑇
𝑑𝑉𝑆𝑑𝑡=0
Realistic Voltage Source

In reality a voltage source can not generate power nor provide infinite energy

𝑉𝑅𝑖>0
𝑉𝑇=𝑉𝑆−𝑉𝑅𝑖⋅𝐼𝑅

For a short circuit, the circuit voltage is zero

𝑉𝑇=0;𝐼𝑆𝐶=𝑉𝑆𝑉𝑅𝑖

For an open circuit, the current is zero

𝐼𝑅=0;𝑉𝑆=𝑉𝑇
Real Voltage Source Power Adjustment

The power supplied to the load by a real voltage source is as follows

𝑃𝑅=𝑉𝑅⋅𝐼𝑅=𝑉2𝑅𝑅=𝐼2𝑅⋅𝑅
𝑉𝑅=𝑉𝑆⋅𝑅𝑅+𝑅𝑖
𝐼𝑅=𝐼𝑆⋅𝑅𝑖𝑅+𝑅𝑖
Maximum Power

The maximum power can be transmitted if the load resistance 𝑅 is equal to the internal resistance 𝑅𝑖 of the source

Current

An ideal current source maintain a constant current throughout the circuit

𝐼𝑅=𝐼𝑆
𝑑𝐼𝑆𝑑𝑡=0
Realistic Current Source

A real current source can not generate power nor provide infinite energy

𝐼𝑇=𝐼𝑆−𝐼𝑅𝑖=𝐼𝑆−𝑉𝑇𝑅𝑖𝐼;𝑅𝑖𝐿>0

For a short circuit, the voltage is zero

𝑉𝑇=0;𝐼𝐾=𝐼𝑆

For an open circuit, the current is zero

𝐼𝑅=0;𝑉𝑇=𝐼𝑆⋅𝑅𝑖
