Scalar Field

A scalar field is a function of several variables of the type

𝑓:ℝ𝑛→ℝ

Which takes in a multi-dimensional vector and outputs a scalar
With the domain

𝑑𝑜𝑚𝑓={(𝑥,𝑦)∈ℝ2:𝑓=(𝑥,𝑦)∈ℝ}

And the image

𝑖𝑚 𝑓={(𝑥,𝑦)∈ℝ:𝑓=(𝑥,𝑦)∈𝑑𝑜𝑚 𝑓}

Level Set

The level set for a scalar field 𝑓 is the set of all input values that output 𝑘

𝑓−1(𝑘)=𝑥∈𝑑𝑜𝑚 𝑓:𝑓(𝑥)=𝑘)

Example

The level set of 𝑓(𝑥,𝑦) =𝑥2 +𝑦2 is a circle

𝑓(𝑥,𝑦) =𝑥2+2𝑥𝑦+𝑦29

Plan to solve limits

  1. Check continuity (plug it in)
  2. Check a few paths
    1. Any two paths differ then the limit DNE
    2. The limit can not be proved to exist via exhaustion
  3. Try Polar Coordinates
Solving limits via polar cordinate
lim(𝑥,𝑦)→0𝑥2𝑦𝑥2+𝑦2
lim𝑟→0+(𝑟cos⁡(𝜃))2𝑟sin⁡(𝜃)𝑟2
lim𝑟→0+𝑟cos⁡(𝜃)2sin⁡(𝜃)
